Seung Yul Oh graduated from Auckland University’s Elam School of Fine Arts with an MFA in 2005, but he has been actively exhibiting his wok since 2003, notably with The ability to blow themselves up, Spiral Gallery, 2003; Seung, deep-fried at Peter’s garage, Peter’s Garage, 2003; Sniffing onioned armpit, Special Gallery, 2004; Seeds of Order Chaos of Rhythms, Elam Students, 2004 curated by Allan Smith, and All the way down back inside the bones of your spine, Peter’s Garage 2005.
In 2005 his career moved to a new level, beginning with representation in Artspace’s New Artists exhibition, Compelled, curated by Rhana Devenportand Snake oil, Recent Acquisitions from the Chartwell Collection, Auckland Art Gallery, 2005 curated by Robert Leonard. In 2006 he staged a large solo show, CHEW CHEW Tongue, at Starkwhite followed by a series of artist’s rejects and representation in public art gallery exhibitions including: 5 4 3 2 1 at the Auckland Art Gallery, curated by Ngahiraka Mason; Bearing at Te Tuhi The Mark, with curator Emma Bugden; Break: Construct at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, curated by Rhana Devenport; Telecom Prospect 2007: New Art New Zealand exhibition at the City Gallery, Wellington curated by Heather Galbraith; and Oddooki, Sculpture Court, Te Papa The Museum of New Zealand, curated by Charlotte Huddleston (2008/2009), Globglob, Newmarket Arts Trust, Newmarket 2010, and Pokpo, Artspace, Auckland 2010.
He won the Waikato National Art Award in 2005, received a CNZ grant in 2007 and was award the prestigious Harriet Friedlander New York Residency in 2010.
