학생시절 오승열 작가는 일일 전시에서 자신의 모든 페인팅을 한꺼번에 선보임으로써 관객들을 놀라게 했다. 그 이후로 작가는 Rhana Devenport에 의해 기획된 Artspace’s (Auckland) New Artists exhibition Compelled (2005)를 시작으로 새로운 시도의 작품을 선보였다. 또한 그는 테마가 있는 몇 개의 다른 전시, Seeds of Order Chaos of Rhythms, Allan Smith가 기획한 Elam Students (2004), Snake oil, 그리고 Auckland Art Gallery (2005)에서 열린 Robert Leonard의 기획전 Chartwell Collection 의 Recent Acquisitions에 참여하기도 했다.
2006년 2월 Auckland, Starkwhite Gallery에서 첫 번째 개인전 CHEW CHEW Tongue을 가진 이후로 오승열 작가는 Auckland Art Gallery로부터 Ngahiraka Mason의 기획전을 위한 새로운 작업, 5 4 3 2 1 Auckland Artists Projects을 부탁 받았다. 오승열 작가는 작품과 관객들을 포함해서 갤러리를 하나의 살아있는 독립체로 만들어버렸다.
오승열 작가의 오뚜기 Oddooki 작품은 New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa(2009/2010) 미술관의 조각전 테라스에 전시되었다. 이 작품의 위탁판매를 맡고 있는 Te Papa가 말하기를 “ 이 작품은 달걀 모양의 다섯 마리 새가 넘어졌다 다시 일어나는 재미나고 장난스러운 컬렉션이다. 이 작품은 전통적 미학과 전형적인 조각품의 요소들을 적절히 대비시켜 보여준다.”
보글보글 Bogle Bogle 작품은 2010년 TheNewDowse에 선보여졌다. 이 작품은 동양의 대중문화와 서구 예술의 각 요소들을 합쳐놓은 새로운 형태의 특색 있는 작품이다. 작가가 말하기를 이번 전시의 제목은 오래된 컴퓨터 게임의 이름에서 따왔다고 한다. 공룡처럼 생긴 캐릭터가 적으로부터 자신을 보호하기 위해 버블을 쏳아올리는 게임이라고 한다.
작가는 2010년 그의 첫 공공미술 작품을 완성시켰다. New Market Business Association와 Auckland City Council’s Public Art Programme 공동의 지휘아래 Auckland, New Market Teed Street에 9개의 달걀모양이 무리 짓는 Globgob 작품이 설치되었다.
오승열 작가는 급속도로 성장하고 있는 아시아 태평양과 국제적 관객들에게 그의 작품을 선보임으로써 그의 경력에 새로운 줄을 긋고 있다. 2010년 Artspace (Auckland)에서는 Melbourne Art Fair의 Project Rooms에 그의 작업을 전시했다. 그의 작업은 호주 컬렉터들의 이목을 끌었다. 오승열 작가는 전업작가로 활동하고 있으나 가끔 Auckland University’s Elam School of Fine Arts에서 학생들 ‘지도수업’을 하기도 한다.
오승열 작가의 작업은 댄스와 비교하면 좋을 것 같다- 장난스럽게 느껴지는 작업일지라도 장시간의 육체적 노동을 통하여 만들어진 산물이다. 작가는 모든 작품들을 힘들이지 않고 만든 것처럼 보이게 한다- 그는 조각서부터 구상화, 추상화, 3D 의인화까지 두루 섭렵한다. 하지만 모두 공통적으로 유머를 주제로 한다.
작가는 명공으로 불릴 수 있겠다. 그러나 그는 작품의 수명이 짧은 것에 대해서는 크게 신경 쓰지 않는다. 예를 들어, Starkwhite 갤러리에서 열린 전시에서 가장 중요한 핵심 요소가 전시 기간 동안 거대한 풍선의 바람이 서서히 빠져버리는 것이었으니까 말이다.
